Shedding some light on a tough teaser

In a basement there are three light switches that control three lights on the main floor of the same house.  You begin in the basement, cannot see any of the lights, or shadows from the basement and can only go upstairs one time and cannot return to the basement once there.  What can you do to figure out which light switch goes with which light bulb?  This is not a trick question.  There is a real world solution.

  1. turn on the 1st switch to make the bulb hot, then turn it off. Turn on switch 2 and go to floor 3. If the bulb's on, it's switch 2, if the bulb is warm, it's 1 if it is off and cold, 3.
